What is Botox®?
Botulinum toxin is a chemical produced by the botulinum
bacteria. Botox® is a protein derived from the toxin,
which when injected into a muscle causes it to relax
and become inactive.
It stops the muscle from functioning
by blocking the chemical messages from the nerve to
the muscle. By reducing the movement of the muscle the
skin stops being creased and the lines will soften and
fade away.
Are Botox® treatments safe?
Botox® is injected in tiny amounts very precisely
in specific areas of the face. It has been in use for
cosmetic purposes in the UK since 1978, and has proved
to be extremely safe with very rare side effects. Botox®
is licensed in the UK for cosmetic use.
